Traditional Hand Quilting

Traditional hand quilting has been practiced for centuries as a beautiful and enduring way to join a quilt top, batting, and backing using only a needle and thread. In this class, you will learn the fundamentals of hand quilting while working on a small “quilt sandwich” sample. Using a quilting hoop to hold your work and maintain proper tension, you’ll practice the traditional small running stitch that is the hallmark of hand quilting.

Come discover the art of hand quilting and develop a relaxing, portable skill that can be enjoyed almost anywhere. Whether you are new to quilting or looking to expand your quilting skills, this class will give you the confidence to add this timeless finishing technique to your quilts.

Please note: This is a technique-focused class. Students will practice on quilt samples rather than work on completed quilt projects.

Instructor Bio: I've been quilting since 1989. My interest in quilting began when I started seeing beautiful vintage quilts featured in home décor and decided I wanted one for my own home. Since I had been sewing for years, I thought, "Why not make one myself?" That decision sparked a lifelong passion. Over the years, I've enjoyed teaching quilting classes, including several years at Thimble Creek in Walnut Creek. I'm excited to be returning to the classroom and sharing my love of quilting at The Cotton Patch. I enjoy many different quilting styles. While my heart leans toward traditional quilts, I appreciate modern designs just as much. I especially love traditional hand quilting, appliqué, piecing, and selected foundation paper-piecing techniques. Fun fact: The very first quilt I made—37 years ago—was so bad that I gave it to my dog!
